Hood Industries, Inc. is seeking a Purchasing Manager to join our lumber manufacturing facility in Waynesboro, MS. This is an exciting opportunity during a major expansion that includes construction of a new, state-of-the-art sawmill while continuing operations at our existing facility.

During this transition period, the Purchasing Manager will oversee purchasing operations for the current mill while supporting procurement planning and coordination for the new mill through construction and startup.

This role leads the purchasing department and supply room operations ensuring the timely and cost-effective procurement of materials, equipment, tools, machinery, and services necessary for plant operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage purchasing operations for the mill ensuring compliance with company, regulatory (tax), and legal requirements.
  • Develop and maintain consistent purchasing processes, standards, and performance expectations.
  • Procure materials, supplies, equipment, and services required for mill operations.
  • Solicit competitive bids and quotes, negotiate pricing, and volume purchase agreements to secure the best prices, terms, and responsiveness.
  • Oversee receiving staff to ensure materials are received, documented, and entered accurately into the Guardian Purchase Order software system.
  • Manage the storeroom and parts warehouse to maintain accurate inventory levels and proper organization.
  • Build and maintain strong, ethical relationships with suppliers and vendors.
  • Monitor vendor performance and stay informed of market conditions that may impact product pricing, availability, or delivery timelines.
  • Maintain accurate purchasing records in the company’s Guardian system including requisitions, purchase orders, and receiving records.
  • Ensure all contractors and suppliers maintain up-to-date certificates of insurance while working on site.
  • Review usage patterns, budgets, and operational plans to identify cost-saving opportunities and supply chain improvements.
  • Understand the state and local tax laws and regulations. Apply proper tax codes to all items purchased.
  • Maintain safety documentation including Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for chemical purchases and ensure documentation is available as required.
  • Investigate and resolve material quality issues or vendor concerns in collaboration with plant staff and suppliers.
  • Lead, mentor, and support storeroom and purchasing staff.

Requirements/Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent with experience or training in computer-based accounting, purchasing, or administration systems.
  • 5-6 years of experience in purchasing, administration, accounting, or related roles within a manufacturing environment.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience purchasing plant equipment, materials, or industrial supplies.
  • Strong purchasing negotiation, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication, planning, and organizational abilities.
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain long-term vendor relationships.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to mentor and support team members.
  • Flexibility to work occasional nights, weekends, or after-hours when operational needs are required.

Salary Range: $86,000 - $104,000
