Wakefern prides itself in being the industry leader in Logistics, Transportation, and Distribution. Our organization currently services over 400+ retail stores throughout the northeast. The Logistics Infrastructure includes 9 warehouses in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, housing 4 million square feet of warehouse space. Wakefern’s fleet of over 2000 trailers ship approximately 1.4 million cases daily while traveling 52,000,000 miles per year! This sophisticated operation utilizes state of the art technology to meet the needs of our more than 8 million customers.
Operations Track
What you will do
This internship goes beyond a typical desk job, you’ll be immersed in the core of our supply chain operations. Interns will work on-site in a warehouse gaining real-world experience in supervising daily activities and ensuring operational excellence. This is a hands-on role that offers a complete view of warehouse management and prepares you for a successful career in supply chain. You’ll have the opportunity to apply classroom concepts in a live setting, bridging theory with practice. By working at the heart of our operations, you’ll develop insights and leadership skills that set you apart as both an exceptional student and a competitive candidate for future roles in the industry.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor new procedures, policies, and technologies to ensure efficiency and compliance.
- Inspect work areas regularly to uphold high standards of cleanliness and safety.
- Oversee work quality and service levels to meet or exceed customer expectations. Assist in resolving operational issues that impact order fulfillment and delivery timelines.
- Learn to operate Warehouse Management Systems, including SAP and RAPID.
- Work in a refrigerated or dry warehouse (warehouse environment varies based on location placed in).
- Maintain items record, document necessary information, and utilize reports to project warehouse status.
- Identify areas of improvement and establish innovatively or adjust existing work procedures and practices.
- 5 days on site - no remote work.
- Wear OSHA-Compliant Steel Toe or Composite Safety Boots when in the warehouse is required.
- Bilingual Spanish / English is a plus, but not required.
- Provide coverage for the Shift Supervisors, working any 5 of the 7-days, including weekends, holidays, vacations, and peak volume periods. Interns work 40 hours per week.
- Operate mobile equipment, specifically a single pallet jack. No prior certification required; comprehensive on-the-job training provided.
- Various projects as assigned.
- Interns will be based out of one of the following warehouse locations and may work one of the following shifts:

Northern Perishables – Elizabeth, NJ
- 1st Shift (6am-2:30pm)
- 2nd Shift (1pm-9:30pm)
Southern Perishables – Keasbey, NJ
- 1st Shift (6:30am-3pm)
- 2nd Shift (2pm-10:30pm)
Produce Facility – Newark, NJ
- 1st Shift (7am-3pm)
Transportation Track
This internship places you at the center of a high-energy, fast-paced operation that supports the largest private fleet of trucks in the Northeast. Transportation is the backbone of our supply chain, ensuring products move efficiently from distribution centers to stores. You’ll gain firsthand experience in the critical behind-the-scenes processes that make timely deliveries possible. Every decision you make impacts service levels, cost control, and customer satisfaction, giving you a unique perspective on how logistics drives retail success.
What You Will Do
- Manage and optimize dispatch operations by assigning routes, monitoring real-time activities, and ensuring compliance with Hours of Service regulations to maximize fleet utilization.
- Maintain proactive communication with customers and third-party providers regarding delivery status, emergencies, and loading quality.
- Track and analyze delivery performance and customer feedback to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
- Verify drivers’ logs, worksheets, and vehicle condition reports to ensure regulatory compliance and fleet safety.
- Participate in special projects focused on improving route planning, reducing transportation costs, and enhancing delivery performance.
- 5 days on site - no remote work.
- Provide coverage for the Transportation Supervisors, working any 5 of the 7-days, including weekends, holidays, vacations, and peak volume periods. Interns work 40 hours per week.

What we are looking for
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Must have completed 24 college credits with a 3.0 cumulative GPA or better
- Will be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate school for fall
- Successful completion of a substance abuse test is required
- Successful completion of a background check is required
- Reliable transportation is required
- Strong interpersonal, analytical, and customer service skills with the ability to multitask and manage time effectively
- Excellent communication skills (written, oral, and presentation)
- Strong MS Office skills (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint required)
- Ability to exhibit proper business etiquette when dealing with all levels of the organization
- Previous work experience in a retail environment is beneficial
- Must have flexibility with regard to schedule which is working 5 out of 7-days including weekends, holidays, vacations and peak volume weeks (interns will work 40 hours per week)

Compensation and Benefits
First year Wakefern Supply Chain/Logistic Interns will be paid at $18.00 per hour. Master Students and Returning Wakefern Supply Chain/Logistic Interns will be paid at $19.00 per hour. Interns are not eligible for company benefits including medical, dental, and vision coverage, life and disability insurance, a 401(k) retirement plan with company match & annual company contribution, paid time off and holidays.
