Job Summary And Qualifications
The System Director, Sourcing and Procurement provides system-level leadership for strategic sourcing, category management, procurement operations, buyer performance, supplier enablement, and purchase-order execution across the health system. Reporting to the Vice President of Supply Chain, this role owns the system sourcing agenda and procurement operating model, developing strategies that improve total cost of ownership, purchasing compliance, service performance, supply continuity, and stakeholder experience while translating approved sourcing and contracting strategies into accurate, timely, and compliant purchases.
The Director leads the sourcing and procurement organization and partners closely with the System Directors of Contracting, Value Analysis, and Supply Chain Operations, as well as physicians and clinical leaders, Finance, Accounts Payable, Information Technology, Legal, and suppliers. The role leads category strategy, competitive sourcing, and commercial supplier negotiations within delegated authority, while partnering with Contracting on formal agreements and contract lifecycle activities. Through market intelligence, analytics, standardized processes, supplier relationship management, and digital procurement capabilities, the Director reduces variation, strengthens resilience, develops talent, and builds scalable system procurement practices
What you will do in this role:
Procurement Operations and Buyer Leadership:
  • Lead the system procurement function, including buyers and assigned purchasing resources, with clear service expectations, standardized work, decision rights, workload management, and accountability.
  • Own requisition-to-purchase-order performance across hospitals, ambulatory sites, and system departments, improving cycle time, purchase-order quality, policy compliance, and stakeholder experience
  • Establish and manage procurement service levels and performance measures for productivity, responsiveness, backlog, accuracy, compliance, exceptions, and customer experience; use capacity and demand data to optimize coverage and escalation pathways.
  • Coach and develop the procurement team through performance management, cross-training, succession planning, and professional development.
Strategic Sourcing & Category Management:
  • Own the system strategic sourcing agenda and multi-year category pipeline, prioritizing opportunities based on financial value, clinical and operational impact, supply risk, stakeholder priorities, market dynamics, and organizational readiness.
  • Develop and execute category strategies using spend and utilization analytics, market intelligence, benchmarking, supplier capabilities, and total-cost-of-ownership principles; maintain category roadmaps that drive competition, standardization, consolidation, demand management, and value realization.
  • Lead competitive sourcing activities within delegated authority, including RFx events, market assessments, supplier evaluation, quote and commercial analysis, and negotiation strategy; partner with physicians, clinicians, Value Analysis, and operational leaders to balance quality, outcomes, innovation, supply assurance, and financial value.
  • Partner with clinical and operational leaders to identify utilization, specification, standardization, and consumption opportunities that reduce total cost while maintaining or improving clinical and operational outcomes.
  • Optimize use of GPO and local agreements, approved suppliers, formularies, and standards; identify contract leakage, non-contracted spend, supplier fragmentation, and recurring exceptions, and support new facilities, acquisitions, conversions, and integrations through sourcing and procurement standardization.
Contract Negotiation & Contracting Partnership:
  • Lead the commercial components of supplier negotiations within delegated authority, including pricing, service levels, performance expectations, implementation requirements, incentives, and total-cost considerations.
  • Partner with the System Director of Contracting and Legal on complex agreements, formal terms and conditions, amendments, renewals, and risk mitigation; provide sourcing strategy, market intelligence, supplier analysis, and operational requirements to support negotiations.
  • Ensure disciplined transition from sourcing and negotiation to contract execution and operationalization, including supplier enablement, pricing, catalogs, buyer guidance, purchasing controls, implementation milestones, and compliance monitoring.
Supplier Relationship Management, Performance and Resilience:
  • Establish differentiated supplier relationship management practices for strategic and critical suppliers, including executive business reviews, performance improvement, innovation, risk management, and joint value-creation opportunities.
  • Oversee supplier onboarding and procurement enablement; establish operational performance measures and escalation practices for responsiveness, fill performance, lead times, ordering and pricing accuracy, freight, invoice-match quality, and recurring service issues.
  • Assess category and supplier risk, including sole-source exposure, geographic concentration, market disruption, and supply continuity; develop commercial and sourcing mitigation strategies in partnership with Supply Chain Operations and other stakeholders.
  • Advance electronic catalogs, EDI, punchout, supplier portals, and related capabilities that improve data quality, transaction reliability, and touchless procurement.
Digital Procurement, Process and Controls:
  • Serve as the business leader for procurement workflows within the ERP and related purchasing technologies, defining standardized, efficient, user-centered, auditable, and scalable future-state processes.
  • Partner with Master Data, Contracting, Finance, Accounts Payable, Information Technology, and Operations to improve supplier, item, pricing, catalog, and purchasing data quality and reliable downstream processing and analytics.
  • Leverage workflow automation, analytics, Lean/root-cause methods, and digital procurement tools to reduce manual work, defects, rework, cycle time, and variation across the procure-to-pay continuum.
  • Financial Performance Value Realization & Compliance:
  • Establish sourcing pipeline governance for opportunity identification, prioritization, resource allocation, stakeholder sponsorship, milestone management, implementation follow-through, and value validation.
  • Accountable for identifying, developing, tracking, and realizing financial and non-financial value from strategic sourcing, demand management, procurement improvement, compliance, automation, and supplier-performance initiatives in partnership with Finance and key stakeholders.
  • Monitor purchasing compliance, purchase-price variance, off-contract spend, PO utilization, invoice exceptions, expedited freight, transaction cost, and related indicators; maintain appropriate segregation of duties, approval discipline, documentation, and audit readiness.
Leadership, Stakeholder Partnership & Change:
  • Lead, coach, and develop sourcing and procurement personnel; align organization structure, skills, workload, resources, and succession plans with system priorities and performance expectations.
  • Build trusted partnerships with clinical and operational leaders, Value Analysis, Supply Chain Operations, Contracting, Finance, Accounts Payable, Information Technology, Legal, and suppliers to align sourcing and procurement priorities with system needs.
  • Lead adoption of standardized processes, technology, policy, and new ways of working across the health system; use stakeholder feedback, service metrics, benchmarking, and operating data to prioritize improvement and strengthen the end-user experience.
  • Communicate sourcing pipeline, procurement performance, supplier risks, value realization, service trends, and transformation progress through dashboards, operating reviews, and executive updates.
